A spirituality for the city

There exists a close link between spirituality and the commitment for the good of the city; this finds its synthesis in ethics: an ethical person tends to act responsibly in the city. This gives politics its true meaning as ‘charitas’, which becomes concrete when it puts in practice the ‘golden rule’: “do to others what you want others to do for you”, that we find in the Gospel and in the Sacred Books of other religions.

“The city, dear brothers and sisters, is all of us!” These are just some of the words of the act of homage Benedict XVI paid at the feet of the Immaculate Conception's statue in Piazza di Spagna in Rome, during the traditional ceremony on December 8th.
“I wish to pay tribute publicly to all those who in silence, not with words, but with deeds, make an effort to practice this evangelical law of love, which sends the world forward” said the pope in another passage of this speech. We propose below the text in its full version.
